Understanding learner diversity and catering to your students’ needs is a hugely important part of teaching. One of our Chatteris alumni, Rajhe Gordon, has some experience with this. In this post, he suggests ways to navigate supporting SEN students in your classroom.

As a new tutor in Hong Kong, one of the most rewarding, yet challenging, aspects of the job can be working with students who have special educational needs (SEN). Whether it’s supporting students with autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, or physical impairments, creating an inclusive and enriching learning environment requires specific strategies and understanding.

Drawing from research, insights from experienced educators, and perspectives shared by peers, here are some key ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ to consider when tutoring SEN students in the Hong Kong school system.

DOs:

  • Get to know each student as an individual. Understand their unique strengths, weaknesses, learning styles, and behavioural triggers. This will allow you to customise your tutoring approach.
  • Collaborate closely with the school’s special education team, including educational psychologists and teaching assistants. Tap into their expertise to develop the best plan for each student.
  • Implement visual aids, hands-on activities, and multi-sensory learning techniques. Many SEN students thrive when content is presented in engaging, atypical ways.
  • Establish clear routines, structures, and expectations. This can help students with conditions like autism or ADHD feel more secure and focused.
  • Provide frequent feedback and celebrate small victories. Positive reinforcement goes a long way in building student confidence.

Advocate for your SEN students and fight for the resources and accommodations they need to succeed.

DON’Ts:

  • Make assumptions about a student’s abilities or potential based on their diagnosis. Every child is unique.
  • Neglect to differentiate instruction. What works for one SEN student may not work for another.
  • Feel discouraged by setbacks or slow progress. Patience and persistence are key when working with SEN learners.
  • Ignore your own self-care needs. Supporting SEN students can be mentally and emotionally draining.

Potential Difficulties

Tutoring SEN students in Hong Kong can present a number of unique challenges, including:

  • Large class sizes: Hong Kong schools often have very high student-to-tutor ratios, making it difficult to give SEN students the individualised attention they need.
  • Limited resources: Access to school therapists, and professional development for teachers can be scarce, especially in less affluent schools.
  • Cultural stigma: In some Hong Kong communities, there may be a stigma attached to learning disabilities or special needs. This can make it harder for students to overcome some challenges.

Navigating these challenges requires creativity, resilience, and a strong support network. But with the right strategies and mindset, new tutors can make a tremendous difference in the lives of their SEN students.
