Ten Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To Hong Kong

June 19, 2025
Moving to Hong Kong is an exciting but nerve-wracking journey. In this post, ex-Chatteris Tutor Shannon D’Costa will be sharing some advice to help you navigate this global metropolis.
1. Learn some basic Cantonese
While it is possible to get around speaking English in Hong Kong, knowing some basic Cantonese can enhance your experience. I would recommend following @itsthepeacocks on Instagram – they have a story highlight called ‘Cantonese’ with different pronunciations. I would also recommend the book ‘Cantonese for Everyone’ by Chow Bun Ching; it’s a good resource for basic greetings, numbers, ordering food, etc. A little effort goes a long way, and local people will appreciate it!
2. Start saving money before you come to Hong Kong
Moving abroad can be a bit more expensive than you might expect, especially in Hong Kong. Chatteris offers interest-free loans, which is helpful, but it’s also a good idea to save some money before you arrive, especially for those initial months.
3. It will take time to settle in
It’s normal to underestimate how long it will take to settle in, but trust me – it takes time! Making new friends and adjusting to life here is a process, but don’t forget that many others are in the same boat as you. I would recommend joining Chatteris LOVE events, and you can also find other events in Hong Kong through the Meetup app.
4. There’s more to Hong Kong than the skyscrapers
Yes, the towering skyscrapers are impressive, but Hong Kong has so much more to offer. Take some time to explore the outlying islands like Lamma, Lantau, or Cheng Chau. There are also great nature spots like Nan Lian Gardens, Lai Chi Kok Garden, and Kowloon Park.
5. Don’t feel pressure to do everything in the first month
The excitement of being in a new place can be overwhelming, so make sure you take some time to relax and recharge. It’s a whirlwind of new experiences, so don’t feel pressured to do everything right away.
6. Be open and friendly
Even when you have found friends that you connect with, keep welcoming new faces in the office. There are always new tutors joining, so make sure to stay open and friendly when you see a new person in the office.
7. Time flies
You may have heard that Hong Kong is a fast-paced city, and it’s true! Whether you are working, socialising with friends or running errands, be prepared for time to fly by! Embrace the hustle and bustle!
8. Make the most of the opportunities offered on the Programme
Through the Chatteris International Graduate Programme you can apply for additional voluntary positions such as on the environment team or blog team, volunteer for one or more of the half a dozen different community programmes offered, and join or even lead a tutor-led social club. So, make sure you apply yourself to what excites you and fill up that CV!
9. Keep in touch with home
Even though you are starting this incredible adventure, don’t forget about your friends and family back home. Set up a regular routine for calls or messages to keep those connections strong – they will be adjusting to your new chapter just as much as you are.
10. Use the MTR Subsidy Scheme
Public transport in Hong Kong is cheap and efficient, but do you want to know what makes it even better? Being able to get money back! Every month, you can tap your Octopus card on one of the blue subsidy collection machines located in many MTR stations or use the Octopus app to claim your subsidy.
Moving to Hong Kong can come with its challenges, but ultimately it will help you to develop both professionally and personally. Good luck!
