Must Eat Places in Hong Kong
Chatteris’ own Kieran Carew chats all things food as he shares his five favourite places to grab a bite in the city…
Food is an important part of any travel experience. But especially when you’re a new English tutor in Hong Kong, you’ve got to figure out the best places to eat. So here are five of my recommendations!
1) Cheung Hing Kee Shanghai Pan Fried Buns

This place is famous for its soup dumplings and they are the perfect snack for those after work cravings. For only $32HKD you can get four pieces of their signature pan fried buns but unlike the regular steamed buns these ones are pan fried which gives them all a crunchy bottom.
The soup is so flavourful but be careful as it can be extremely hot – there are even warning signs all around the restaurant to let you know about the scalding hot soup! I recommend biting the top of the bun off and gently blowing into the bun to cool down the soup.
2) M.Y Majesty

Carbs! Who doesn’t like carbs? Majesty is known for its massive pasta portion sizes and cheap prices and as soon as you walk in the door you are hit with a strong smell of garlic. I highly recommend the spicy Italian sausage in penne pasta for $42HKD or the carbonara for $38HKD.
Regular drinks are a little pricey here so I’d say bring your own drink if you are keen to save money. However, if you feel like going all out, I believe the soda specials are totally worth it! I highly recommend the blueberry and mint soda for $26HKD.
I think this is a cute place to go on a date as you can share a plate of pasta between the two of you as the portion size is so big – just make sure you and your date don’t mind the smell of garlic afterwards! Don’t worry if you don’t have someone to finish off the other half of your pasta, you can grab a takeaway box and pack up your meal and have it for lunch the next day.
3) Thai Chiu
Stumbling into Thai Chiu when lost on the streets of Sham Shui Po was honestly one of the best accidents that has ever happened to me. Thai Chiu is famous for its delicious and creative take on Thai food and my usual go to meal would be the yellow chicken curry with rice for $60HKD.
All meals come with a light broth soup as an appetizer which really rounds out the dish. Another recommendation I can vouch for is the Pad Thai – not only is it visually stunning but it also has the perfect blend of sweet, sour, and salty.
4) Iron Cow Taiwanese Beef Noodles

As you may have guessed from the name of the restaurant, this place is renowned for its beef noodles. I’ve tried multiple dishes from this restaurant and I’ve never been disappointed with anything. I don’t think you can go wrong with the Taiwanese braised beef noodles for $63HKD or if you are only feeling like a snack you could go for the deep fried chicken nuggets for $38HKD which are also really good.
Usually I would never suggest getting a bubble tea other than Gong Cha but the Taiwanese bubble tea here is definitely worth a try! I personally prefer the soup noodles but I’ve been told the dry noodles are good too!
5) Ajisen Ramen
Ajisen Ramen is the most expensive restaurant on this list but it is definitely worth the price if you want some good quality ramen. I have only tried the barbeque pork ramen with corn for $80HKD and the spicy pork ramen for $78HKD. These two dishes are a fantastic option for first time ramener and ramen lovers. The broth has a rich and meaty flavour and you are also given an option as to how firm you want the bite of the noodles to be. Personally I quite like a firm bite to my ramen but that’s just my preference.
